The pop here in Steward is around 800.
Oh we did see several black bears today as we were driving.
September 3rd
I thought we left Alaska, but find out that you can cross back in, only 3 or 4 miles from here. We drove over there this morning. Hyder is just a little town of 100 people. There is a bear sighting platform a few miles out of town and the bears come in there to feed on the salmon. The platform is quite large over the creek were the salmon come up. We spent some time there waiting for the bears, that never came. We might go back later this evening.
From there we drove up a dirt road for 30 miles to the summit of Salmon Glacier. The road was completed in 1965 although it is just a narrow dirt road that clings to the side of the mountains. It did have rugged and spectacular scenery. The pictures just don't show how really rugged and beautiful it was. Actually the road was built to get to copper mines.
We did go back out to look for bears tonight and finally saw a Black Bear that didn't get to close, I don't think he was that hungry .
This is after we left Dease Lake along the Hwy
